Providing a look into the future of watchmaking, Cartier has created the ID Two Concept Watch. The product of more than five years of research and development from 135 different engineers, the ID Two looks to store as much energy as possible while also transferring the energy from the barrels to the oscillator in an efficient matter and minimizing the overall consumption. Utilizing polymer-coated fiberglass springs in place of the usual metal, the watch is able to retain 30% more energy than the typical wristwatch. Additionally, Cartier has re-engineered the generally accepted linear steel and brass drivetrain and replaced it with anti-magnetic and anti-corrosive carbon crystal-coated silicon gears in a “planetary” structure. Both significantly harder and lighter than steel, the new drivetrain produces 1/5th the friction of typical timepieces. Finally, AirFree technology with a vacuum-sealed case allows the carbon crystal oscillator to consume 37% less energy. Beautifully shot in this video, the Cartier ID Two Concept Watch has been broken down in detail by HODINKEE.
