With the newfound status of Kanye West and A$AP Rocky as fashion icons came the public’s heightened awareness of the high-fashion labels they championed. In turn, and with the rise of these iconic luxury brands — as Newton’s law would have it — came a new breed of streetwear, a subversive fashion genre bent on parody and conscious bootlegging. At the forefront of this movement perhaps was Ukrainian-born, Coney Island-raised Russ Karablin, better known as the founder of seminal New York street label SSUR. Known for his use of clothing as a canvas for both cultural discourse and provocation, Karablin and his COMME des FUCKDOWN offshoot turned that clever appropriation into something of a cultural phenomenon. Endorsed by everyone from A$AP Rocky himself to industry professionals and streetwear aficionados, the line of stark black and white garments and accessories had fans buzzing in 2012 like no other label.
In an array of beanies, snapbacks, T-shirts, sweaters and socks, the SSUR 2012 fall/winter COMME des FUCKDOWN collection is available now at our online store.
