Thonet and Andy Martin Craft a Bike Out of Beech Wood

“Bentwood” furniture brand Thonet has teamed up with London-based architect and designer Andy Martin to create a sleek, ergonomic fixed gear bike. The bike, made out of bent beechwood, comes with carbon-fiber wheels and has “sprung rod supports to reinforce joints and major stress areas in the frame.” Bent beechwood is achieved through steaming the wood, a technique which has been used by Thonet since 1830. As with most fixed gear bikes, or “fixies,” it comes without brakes so for those interested: remember to stay safe while on the road.
