Abbots Way is the latest creation by AR Design Studio, a five-bedroom house situated in the south of England. Bordered by mature trees and a lake, its decidedly linear design manages to both starkly juxtapose as well as blend in harmoniously with the natural surroundings. The site is accessed by a private lane and leads to the residence’s main conceptual axis, while a second axis intersects perpendicularly — dividing up the property — and leads to a hot tub and lake. Purposed walls define both axes and each of the four spaces contains separate garden aesthetics and living areas. “Floating” above the intersection of the walls is the main living space, an open plan, box-like structure that contains all five bedrooms and looks out – canopy-like – over an expanse of tree tops and lake views. Elsewhere, glazed glass paneling, white and grey color palette, and the use of natural stone result in a residence as relaxing as it is private. Not just aesthetically pleasing, the home is also energy efficient, with well-implemented insulation, under-floor heating, and large overhangs working together to provide warmth or coolness as the seasons demand.
