If you, like many others, spent a lot of time in front of the TV over the holidays, chances are you saw a commercial for jewelry retailer Zales. If you were paying attention to the ad, you may have pulled out your smartphone or laptop and typed in Google.com to search what song was playing in it. If you did that, you know that “You Ain’t Alone” by Southern soul-revival band Alabama Shakes was rocking your living room. That commercial has proven to be one of the biggest moments for the four-piece Athens, Alabama-based group, as was their performance at Bowery Ballroom in New York City this past fall during the CMJ New Music Festival. Their prowess at CMJ garnered a rave review by The New York Times, which kicked off a whirlwind of press and buzz in the same sort of fashion as the publication’s famous review of Bob Dylan at the beginning of his career. Although careers like Dylan’s are extremely uncommon, the Shakes’ current trajectory looks rather promising. Last week, it was announced that the band’s debut album, Boys & Girls, will hit stores on April 10 by way of Jack White’s renowned Nashville-based label, Third Man Records. Currently, lead singer Brittany Howard is setting stages ablaze with her crew on a 17-date U.S. and London tour, of which many stops are already sold out. To prepare for their concert at The Troubador in Hollywood tonight, they stopped by popular Los Angeles-area public radio station KCRW yesterday for a very special live session. During it, the band performed “Hold On,” which is the lead single from Boys & Girls as well as their self-titled EP that is available now over at Bandcamp.
