Florence + the Machine have unleashed an early audio taste from their still-untitled second album in the shape of “What the Water Gave Me.” The song is inspired by a painting Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and the death of author Virginia Woolf, who drowned herself in a river by filling her coat pockets with stones. Singer Florence Welch offered her perspective to the song during a recent interview with NME.

At lot of the time when I’m writing, things will just appear. I was writing the song and this book on symbolism was lying around, and it had the painting in it. It’s nice to mix the ordinary with extraordinary.

The tune is available now on the band’s website and will appear alongside 12 other tracks on the album, available on November 7. Enjoy!
