The violent content of Rihanna’s latest video “Man Down” has caused some criticism for the Caribbean songstress. The clip that shows RiRi shooting a man in the head provoked reaction from pressure groups such as the Parents Television Council and Industry Ears. Paul Porter, co-founder of U.S. pressure group Industry Ears, said the following:
“If Chris Brown shot a woman in his new video, the world would stop. Rihanna should not get a pass. The video is far from broadcast worthy”.
Melissa Henson, director of communications and public education for the Parents Television Council, said the following:
“Rihanna’s personal story and status as a celebrity superstar provided a golden opportunity for the singer to send an important message to female victims of rape and domestic violence.”
Rihanna insisted that her video could help giving a voice to victims of abuse.
“We just wanted to hone in on a very serious matter that people are afraid to address, especially if you’ve been victimized in this scenario. I’ve been abused in the past and you don’t see me running around killing people in my spare time. If I can be a voice for so many that aren’t heard, then I win twice.”
