After a handful of singles over the course of 2011, SL Jones offers up his brand new mixtape today, The Number 23. Hosted by Don Cannon, The Number 23 includes features from Killer Mike, Pill, Waka Flocka Flame, Trae Tha Truth, Yo Gotti and others, along with production from Lex Luger, Shawty Redd, Don Cannon and more. Here’s a quote from SL Jones on the project:
“With The Number 23 I just went in the studio and started recording. I always focus on song structure – and I pride myself on being able to deliver any kind of track, really – so when it comes to making music I try to make sure I never put myself in a box; it’s important to me that I’m able to display all my strengths. I want longevity, and that’ll come – without compromising – so long as I continue to write good songs. The homie Tone came up with the title and concept initially, and then Cannon suggested the same title after hearing the song “For Twoo Threee.” The Number 23 represents the neighborhood where I was raised – 23rd and Wolfe Street, in Little Rock – and even though I had the whole tape finished before I knew what I was gonna call it The Number 23 was just a perfect fit. With all my previous work I never felt like I had anything to prove; there wasn’t any pressure, it was just me wanting to exist, wanting to be heard. With The Number 23, though, all that has changed. I have a lot to prove; I have to compete if I want to be relevant. I’m the underdog right now, so I have to exceed expectations – and then do it again, and again. It’s all about consistency. At first it was just raw talent, but I’ve grown as an artist, and even though I’m still learning I’m working a lot smarter now and continuing to make quality music. And in the end, that’s what this is really all about – quality music.”
