In his first solo museum exhibition, New York-based artist Stephen Burks intends to make us reconsider the conceptual and aesthetic value of a handmade object or product. Inspired by his collaboration with Senegalese basket weavers, Burks’ “Man Made” exhibition at The Studio Museum in Harlem will showcase a variety of different objects, including tables, lamps and chairs, that were all handmade using a basket weaving technique. The exhibition, which lasts March 31-June 26, 2011, will also be accompanied by a new monograph designed by Burks and Studio Lin as well as photographic and video documentation of his travels presented, along with his own drawings and prototypes.
