Gil Vicente "Enemies" Exhibition

Brazilian artist Gil Vicente ignited a massive controversy with his recent exhibition titled “Enemies” at the Sao Paulo Art Biennial. A series of charcoal works depict Vicente’s assassination of some of the global community’s most influential members. Among those showcased were George W. Bush, Pope Benedict XVI, former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharone, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula de Solva, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. The artist had some powerful words to say regarding the meaning and theme behind his work, “Because they kill so many other people, it would be a favour to kill them, understand? Why don’t people in power and in the elite die?”
