Going by the pseudo-name of Suitman, Hong Kong-based Korean artist Young Kim has long had an affinity with the uniform of the suit. For many, a suit and shirt are “like armour for business men to wear on the battlegrounds of acquisitions and takeovers in conference rooms, or, for college graduates going for job interviews, essential indicators of suitability for membership into the establishment.” In a new project with Hong Kong boutique On Pedder, eyewear brand Dita and visvim, Suitman re-creates the shirt and suit as an art-form based on his identity as somebody of both Korean and American backgrounds. For many years, Suitman has maintained a special art project in which he encourages people to “dress-up” as Suitman for a photo project that has taken place over the last 5 years, hence the need for a quick and convenient way of getting into the “Suitman” persona. The collection includes both apron style shirts and Suitman’s signature black-framed glasses.
