As winners of the NBA’s first draft lottery, the New York Knicks selected seven footer Patrick Ewing to cornerstone their team. Despite not paying dividends in the form of titles, the big man became an unforgettable member of New York’s die hard basketball community for the next 15 years. For 2008, New York will once again look to the basketball gods in hopes of securing something good on Tuesday, May 20th. In a similar spirit to an event that started last year, one day before the official draft, Classic Kicks will host their own lottery drawing on May 19th with the release of a No Mas x Puma First Round modeled in classic New York colors. Participants will be given the opportunity to score a life size portrait of New York’s former captain, Patrick Ewing. RSVP’s are required at lottery@nomas-nyc.com

Stussy’s latest 2008 summer collection of t-shirts have started filtering out and making themselves available through numerous Stussy outlets. As part of their latest collection of tees as part of the Artist Series, living legends Eric Haze and Chris “Daze” Ellis have participated in the special collection. Eric Haze contributed the Chisel and Scratch tee while Daze’s work features the Dog tee. Available now at select Stussy dealers as well as Stussy Direct.
In the meeting of two colossal pairings, Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol of SA Studios were chosen to help create the movie poster for Overture Films’ upcoming motion picture Righteous Kill starting Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Also within the creative mix is leading art brand Upper Playground, as this poster represents the debut of an ongoing partnership between UP, SA Studios and Overture Films. This August, SA Studios will open up the SA Studios x Righteous Kill Downtown LA Experience featuring movie merchandise and signed lithographs by Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol. The movie Righteous Kill opens up September 12th, 2008.

Crazy ass week as much of it was spent in Beijing for the launch of Nike Sportswear. Sleepless nights and tons of work went hand in hand but still a fun time nonetheless. Say what you will about Lil Wayne, but it is obvious that he is quickly becoming one of the most dominant artists in not just hip hop but in music over all. The New Orleans natives’ relentless work ethic, his ability to unconsciously string together similes and metaphors and his penchant for virtually transforming his vocal timbre into a flow that almost becomes a musical instrument over tracks has made him omnipresent on the radio, videos and mix tapes. Though still a young man Wayne is a seasoned veteran whose skill has grown by leaps and bounds. He routinely releases energetic verses that play with rhyme patterns and tweaks flow in a state in hip hop when MCs all seemingly rely on the safe conventional conversational approach. His subject matter is almost a schizophrenic as he bounces between the humorous and emotional but it culminates in a formula that has garnered him the respect of certain legendary MCs and the wrath of others.
However, with popularity comes backlash and eventually unabashed hatred. Seemingly unaffected by the new crop of naysayers Wayne continued his onslaught on the listening public by releasing “Lollipop” the first single of his highly anticipated, long delayed “The Carter III”. The track is a hazy codeine induced song the combines a slow down tempo electro hip hop sound complete with auto tune vocals. When released, the song went number one on the charts almost immediately ensuring the public will hear the track all summer long and confirming Wayne’s popularity. Not content to rest on his laurels Wayne has recently released a remix to the song with arguably the other most popular MC on the planet Kanye West. On the remix, the playful vibe of the original is shifted a bit as the track becomes a trade of verse amongst two MCs who are now safely heavyweights in the game.
Indonesian artist Darbotz recently released a small capsule of t-shirts as part of Cumi’s 2008 collection, part 1. We’ve seen a string of up and coming South East Asian brands take flight and Cumi is no exception. The tees both feature detailed prints on cut & sew bodies. Japanese photographer Yone is set to present his work to the American public this weekend. In some aspects, Yonehara Yasamasa embodies the same characteristics of another popular Western photographer, Terry Richardson with their liberal photographic style and subjects. One of his most recent projects included an extensive pictorial journey with Aki Hoshino on the book Sneaker Lover. With previous campaigns including Casio G-Shock, Staple Design and American Apparel, LA Confidential will add to a growing list of accomplishments. The event thrown by House of Cassette and Mighty Printing will take place Saturday, May 17th.
