Nike SB "Concepts Lobster" Dunk

Concepts will be releasing their collaborative Nike SB “Lobster” Dunk on Saturday, May 31st. The shoe, inspired by the seafood heritage of New England, will be available in a limited edition set, available exclusively at Concepts. The first 200 pairs, which include the limited packaging, come equipped with a lobster claw rubber band, a tee shirt, a condiment box (which includes lobster shell cracker, fork, bib, an extra set of laces, and wet nap) and a poster, all put into a traditional paper bag used by typical, New England lobster retailers. Not only will the packaging and bag be branded with the “Concepts Fishing Company” graphic, but the release at Concepts will also be catered by Legal Seafoods, who will be providing lobster appetizers. The release will be followed by a raffle for some additional exclusive goodies. The special pack will be extremely limited to 200 pairs, and will retail for $150 USD and the first 50 pairs will come with a special, limited edition wooden box. The latest from the Burton Project 13 Artist Series comes a t-shirt by the San Francisco based artist, Benny Gold. On this tee, Benny has flipped one of his signature argyle patterns by reworking diamonds into the mountains. Two colors have been created and are now available at Burton flagship stores.

Common: Universal Mind Control

Common: Universal Mind Control

The biggest misconception about Chicago MC Common is that he is some granola eating, sandal and dashiki wearing, neo bohemian hippie rapper. Sure, he does have that side to him (mostly on his last album “Finding Forever”) but the truth is Common is more adept to spew a clever punch line over Primo scratches then a back pack cliché over an obscure sample (sans his experimental rap album “Electric Circus”). Common has remained relevant in a fickle industry by staying true to his metaphor and simile roots and being astute enough to realize which beats fit him instead of running to the latest super producer for the new hot sound. Even his pairing with Kanye made complete sense given the soulful nature of Common’s past work and Kanye’s uncanny ability to make a chopped soul sample sound as if the artist made it yesterday. The latter half of Common’s music catalogue finds Common balancing his raw hip hop roots with a more laid back jazz vibe. However, if the first single to Common’s yet to be released “Invincible Summer” is indication; we may be finding an MC on the cusp of reinvention. The first thing the listener recognizes as the song “Universal Mind Control” begins is that Common is obviously embracing the electro hip hop house sound that has been pervasive for about a year and a half now. But, when he starts rhyming the reminder that electro hip hop is nothing new comes swiftly as Common uses a familiar staccato rhyme pattern utilized in the early days of hip hop. Pharrell eventually chimes in on the chorus with a very Afrika Bambata-ish echo effect galvanizing B-boys to the dance floor. The computer funk sound gives the song a refreshing vintage yet current feel.

Nike Vandal Supreme

Nike Vandal Supreme

Most everybody knows that Nike has been blazing campaign trail remembering in their truest forms some of the brands most iconic models. While last year featured the Air Force 1, this year the limelight is shared with other models such as the Dunk and to a lesser extent classics such as the Vandal and retro running styles. The Vandal Supreme here references OG colors and the unmistakable nylon upper which new fans and veterans alike yearn for. The vintage treatment continues from Nike’s end as the Vandal features a discolored midsole and other wrinkled upper. A visible of a Dunk High featuring the Vandal Supreme nylon upper has also been confirmed, but no word if that will be released later this year.
