With WTAPS concept shop Hoods Hong Kong created in association with Neighborhood on the horizon, select pieces from WTAPS’ 2008 spring collection titled “Extreme Prejudice” has begun to drop. The collaborative efforts of Descente and Futura Laboratores has brought forth a new sense of performance credibility as the mash-up looks to combine FL aesthetics with Descente’s time tested performance qualities. The highlight of the four piece collection is the Mizusawa down jacket. Built with DiAPLX fabric (by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries), the intelligent fabric possesses qualities far beyond the norm in technical fabrics. The material is able to react accordingly to ambient temperature. When the core temperature is cool, the molecules within the fabric remain close together and retain heat, however once the core temperature rises, the molecules will force themselves apart to allow for moisture to escape. All while this is happening, the material remains waterproof and windproof. This material holds similar properties to Schoeller’s c_change fabric recent seen on the Canada Goose Non Insulated collection. Rounding out the releases are various Atomic Ring camo models, from vests to light spring jackets.

Whilst fixed gear bikes have experienced a substantial rise in popularity in recent times, few if any will ever experience what bike messengers have endured as they paved the way and created a strong foundation for track bikes. In the upcoming exhibition, New York Bike Dreams, photographer and messenger Takuya Sakamoto will share his experiences over the years in a series of photographs taken on the job. The whole sub-culture and lifestyle is revealed in this visual foray into the bike messenger world, in New York none the less. Growing up in Yokohama and Okayama, Sakamoto would become an integral part of Japanese dance culture which included trips to Brazil to train extensively in capoeira. Soon after in 1998, he would move to New York City where he would embrace life as a messenger. With the vast amount of photographic opportunities before him, close friend Eddie Williams would release a book titled “Bike Messengers Life New York City”, bringing to light Sakamoto’s skills behind the camera (albeit a disposable point and shoot).

COMME des GARCONS recently gave the crew over at the newest Guerrilla Store location in Downtown Los Angeles the green light to design and create some very special LA exclusive items for the shop owners and its staff. Brett Westfall and Tak, the proprietors of the +1213 Guerrilla Store, designed some very unique and tough looking denim vests which feature intricately designed patches that reflect both owners interests in skateboarding and fixed gear bicycles. Also, the front of the vests features patches with the acronyms: V.F.T.I., which stands for Victory For The Independent and D.N.P., which stands for Dirty Ninja Pirates – a way of life. V.F.T.I. signifies the merging of Brett and Tak’s company with the always cutting edge label, COMME des GARCONS. Both companies live by a code of being independent spirits, which is what makes this partnership very exciting. Another interesting tidbit of information is that the clothing on the sales floor rotates, so the store is always kept fresh with new items. Make sure you stop by during its year long occupation in Los Angeles.
