This Ferrari 500 Mondial Is an Icon of a Bygone Era
A retired racehorse that has accompanied an admiral across the globe.
Now a rarity in the modern Ferrari world of 8- and 12-cylinder cars, the 4-cylinder 1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Series II was a veritable racehorse of its time. Bought after its retirement from a career on the circuit by Rear Admiral Robert A. Phillips for the sum of $2,225 USD, the car subsequently followed the seaman and his family in criss-crossing the globe, and was gradually repaired to pristine condition but draining two-thirds of the admiral’s salary in the process. Watch the beautifully shot video above for an insight into the bond between man and machine, that has lasted many decades since.
