Refillable Color Dial Spray Can

December 30, 2009Uncategorizedby Staff666 Views

Winning the 2009 Red Dot Award for Green design is this refillable Color Dial Spray, a novel design for a spray can that contains four color cartridges (CMYK) in the one can. Two dials (for hue and brightness) help the painter achieve the exact color required. The concept was developed by designers Kim Youngsuk & Kim Woosik of South Korea. More detailed information regarding the design can be found below.

In South Korea, around 180,000 tonnes of cans are produced every year. The recycling rate for these is only around seventy-one per cent. Those that are discarded lead not only to the wastage of metal and an increase of garbage, but also to a greater consumption of raw materials and energy in order to produce more cans.

According to South Korea’s metal can resources society, the country’s use of metal cans is gradually reducing, but the consumption of aluminium cans in particular is increasing due to a greater consumption of beer. Plenty of spray cans are wasted as well, being discarded after a single use. Color Dial Spray aims to reduce their consumption.

Generally, spray cans contain only one colour. If only a small amount of paint is required, there will be considerable wastage. Color Dial Spray is a new type of spray can that contains CMYK colour cartridges in the one can. The user can immediately change the colour by turning the colour dials near the top of the can.

There are two dials: one for hue and one for brightness. These allow for precise mixing of the particular colour desired. The colour cartridges can be refilled many times over. This helps with the reduction of waste. The compact form of Color Dial Spray is convenient and portable

Even if it did work, which it dosent at present, It will never work for graffiti. And iwould run out as fast as any other can, so forget this replacing the need to carry 10 cans. If it worked, which is irrelevant as there is no such system on the market, you would haved to carry mad refills and swap them out as often as ya swap cans and caps. As if the adverse and tense conditions in which graffiti is produced wasnt bad enough, now you find yourself on a rooftop, at shop shutters on Front st, or in the yard with bulls rollin by, and  you got to fumble with a load of refills for your fancy can. I’ll stick to the Rusto/Painter Touch I get for free at giant home improvement stores…

Maybe the best solution would be for companies such as Montana & Belton to develop solutions into recycling empty cans? I imagine the above idea would just end up like a home printer running low on ink quickly, many writers like the comfort of paint that they are used to using.

this product is bullshit….this person has obviously never mixed paint…. the ability to clean the cap is not addressed…and how is the paint mixed “precisely”?……it is an interesting IDEA but there is no proof that it actually works…..

This is very clever but it would become a hassle. You would need to own a few of these to paint with because when you piece go back and forth so you would need at least two but probably more like 4 or 5 to be comfortable. Two things that come to mind instantly is 1. What is the quality of the paint 2. how long till the can itself clogs because if the can clogs it would be like a giant fat cap itself or an air brush that is constantly a being cleaned which becomes a huge waste of time.

Imagine if one day, it was just your can, and it had skinny and fat settings, set colors itself, you just pick one, and it refilled itself at a docking station? this would be the most versatile tool ever. I can effeminately dig this. all you haters shut. there’s nothing wrong with technology that actually makes things simpler and easier, and its green

What this needs is a USB connection and software so I can set a color via the computer, then spray it.
