    Devin Kenny: agreed!

enjoi: the movie basquiat is interesting. first time i saw it, i thought, “eh.” but then i read phoebe hoban’s book A QUICK KILLING IN ART, which is a fantastic biography on basquiat & really gives a lot of insight into the 80s art scene especially. i would suggest for anyone who’s really into him to give the book a read & then go & re-watch the film. i liked it a lot more & appreciated more fully what schnabel had done with the film.

While this is not the forum for critical thinking, but rather celebratory or inflammatory comments, I’ll go ahead. First of all, these photos are a pleasure to see. Second of all, Jean-Michel Basquiat was not a Pop artist. If you’re to even take upon the task of historicizing, it’s much more apt to associate him with the Neo-Expressionist school, however wide it may be (Julian Schnabel, Marlene Dumas, David Hockney, Leon Golub, etc etc). The distinction is important, because those two groups of artists had separate concerns and to conflate or confuse them does their work a disservice. By the by, if that’s linen he’s painting on, I’m kinda buggin’ out.

  • A Savvy

That last pic is gorgeous! I remember seeing his exhibit @ MOCA a few years ago. At the end, they showed a documentary on his life. I cried like a baby as I drove home that day. Definitely gone too soon, but we are blessed to have his spirit still with us thru his work.

Why should they make tshirts of him? Haven’t most great artists of “our” generation been minimilized to screen prints on shirts with company logos strategically placed?! Reebok already bastardized him with those horrible basquait boppers or whatever they were called. While I’m all for artists getting the respect and due they deserve, sometimes I feel putting their work on streatwear shirts (as opposed to musuem gift shop shirts) degrades their work. Also, do you really think if Basquait were alive today he’d do a colab with the hundreds, huf, or whatever company? Anyway, I’m rambling. Oh, one last thing, these series of pictures were to show basquiats artistic process, not for a forum that he looks like kid cudi. Ps, if you squint really hard, georgia o’keef looks like lada gaga. Peace
