Artist Yayoi Kusama’s trademark use of polka dots can be seen applied to this recent multi-brand project between XLarge, X-girl and Porter. Interestingly enough, much of Kusama’s inspirations and polka dot designs are derived from a series of hallucinations she experienced as a child which was spawned by physical abuse from her mother. 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the London boutique The Hideout and so to celebrate this event, The Hideout will be working with some friends and partners on some collaboration products. The first one is a messenger bag with Japanese luggage maker, Porter. The messenger bag is “styled after a traditional Newsboy bag in canvas with triple-stitch construction and stud rivets, but with modern features from a contemporary Porter bag. The shop motto ‘MY KARMA DRIVES OVER MY DOGMA’ is chain stitched on the front.”

Visvim recently released a collection of shoes including the FBT and the Kiefer Hi under a “New Year” motif. Continuing with this New Year collection are some new accessories including a Ballistic Backpack and a Ballistic E-Cat messenger bag. Futura Laboratories has included a variety of different bags into their most recent releases. One of the newest designs is the Checker Messenger Bag. As the name states, the highlighting feature of this bag is a checkered flap. Safe and secure use comes via metal buckles and loops. Manhattan Portage has had a long and storied past since 1980 with many innovative features which have integrated itself into the urban bag scene such as single strapped Cordura bags and durable Delrin buckles. Their everyday urban relevance has led to a collaboration with XLarge on their 1610 messenger bag. Integral features include the use of Cordura materials and entirely waterproof inner and 3M accents. The OriginalFake brand currated by KAWS has recently collaborated with Gallery 1950 (G1950) on a Porter messenger bag. The bag features a Chomper pattern original designed by KAWS on the outside of the flap while the inside of the flap has the logos of OriginalFake, Gallery 1950 and KAWS’ version of Pipo Kun. The bag is current available now at OriginalFake dealers for a price of ￥29,400 JPY (approximately $256USD). Available now at Helden.
The STLESS division of Zozotown recently previewed their latest collaboration with Futura Laboratories on a messenger bag. The messenger bag is available in two colors green and pink. The design of the bag revolves around an ergonomic design for cyclists. Pre-orders are currently available, with a release slated for early January. A total of 30 bags per each color will be released.
Japanese streetwear label Montage began in 1995. 10 years later they have maintained a strong position and pedigree in the Japanese market. A look here reveals some of their 2007 Collection.
