Sneaker Pimps made their second Canadian stop this past February ninth. Le Studio Juste Pour Rire (Just For Laughs) in Montreal played host to live music from Hatchmatik and A-Rock of Peer Pressure alongside classic hip hop duo Black Sheep. Artist installations from Futura, Stash and 123Klan set things off right. Here we present a unique look at the event, through a series of Polaroids featuring Futura and Stash amongst some of Montreal’s biggest sneakerheads including members of the WRG?, Off the hook, Norml, and GDFT crews. Next stop Vancouver, February 21st, 2008.
This week marks the 5th anniversary of trailblazing record label Ed Banger. A party later this week will mark the momentous occasion, with a staple of Ed Banger talent performing such as Busy P, Mr. Flash, So-Me, DJ Mehdi and special guests UK’s Trevor Jackson and Nil. The party will take place at Bordeaux’s Le 4 Sans.

Sneaker Pimps kicked off their Canadian leg of their worldwide tour on February first. The Circa in Toronto was the venue as hordes of Toronto sneaker heads packed the place. Futura, Stash and Klan123 also worked their magic with live art installations. The event also served as the launching point of the Dunk Wars Challenge which will also includes a website that goes live on February 29th. “Dunk Wars” pays tribute to 8 classic Dunks alongside 8 of Canada’s biggest cultural influencers.
As fashion designers and sporting giants look to each other in seasonal co-branded collaborations, the adidas and Yohji Yamamoto team which created Y-3 has consistently produced well received collections with the simple direction of blurring sports and fashion, a basis of the collection’s continually success. Y-3 recently conducted their 2008 Fall/Winter preview at Fashion Week New York.
Levi’s back pocket has raised a lot of controversy in the past, as Levi’s hit to the courts in efforts to thwart the further use of their iconic and trademarked arcrute design. In the Backpocket Gallery, a group of artists were chosen to design their very own back pocket. To officially kick off the three-way collaboration between sportswear giant adidas, sneaker shop UNDFTD and famed photographer Estevan Oriol, downtown Los Angeles was the venue for the opening party. Estevan Oriol was on hand to sign autographs while photos from his book and the package itself were on display. Look for the comprehensive package to hit Consortium releases soon.
Fukuoka’s Dice&Dice is continuing their celebration of their 20th anniversary with round two of the festivities. In early October, they hosted a party which included live installations by Futura. Special guests include DJ Muro providing the music. The event takes place March 1st, 2008 at O/D Fukuoka.
Afrology by James Top is an upcoming solo exhibit surrounding the culture of the popular 1970’s hairstyle, the “Afro”. The seventeen renditions of James Top represents the base of a deeper message which Top attempts to convey regarding what he calls the “African American Experience”. From his time as founder member of the The Odd Partners (TOP) the graffiti group to bombing NYC trains and creating gallery work, James Top can now be seen in the classroom teaching a controversial class on graffiti at the Bronx’s Hostos College. The debate rages on about teaching the culturally rich but illegal art form in a school room environment. Afrology will open on Friday, February 22nd at the Essex Street Gallery.

The original touring sneaker show, Sneaker Pimps will hit up the Great White North, the land of hockey, “eh’s” and free health care in a three city tour. These three shows will also include living legends Futura and Stash in live artist installations, while the musical accompaniment includes Biz Markie, DJ Premier, DJ Whookid and Black Sheep. The show will hit Toronto on February 1st, Montreal on February 9th and conclude in Vancouver on February 21st.
Piece of Piece is an upcoming art show set to take place next month. The event includes the art division of Japanese department store Parco, toy-maker LEGO and humanitarian initiative UNESCO. The theme of the show is to recreate world heritage sites and peace through LEGO and other methods. Matt Waldman of Nooka was among the guest artists chosen. The efforts of Matt Waldman seen here are a depiction of how architecture is the societal pinnacle of humanistic examples of arts and technology. The destruction of buildings and monuments represent a reminder of war and the destruction of peace. The show begins February 1st, at the Parco Art Gallery in Shibuya, Tokyo.
