Bicycle Film Festival 2008 - New York

On the first legs of its world tour, the Bicycle Film Festival hit up New York for five days of two wheeled mayhem. The images depicted here are from the Street Party which happened on May 31st and judging by the pictures, the crowd was an eclectic mix of bike riders from numerous disciplines. From the large contingency of fixie riders to sparing numbers of BMX and track riders, the event looked to have received a solid turn out. Even in this weak state of economy, it seems that the power of streetwear cannot be stopped. HUF, the famed San Francisco streetwear/skate retailer started by Keith Hufnagel, is expanding its empire and will be opening their 5th location in Los Angeles this Saturday, May 31st. Among the special grand opening items are a series of t-shirts created with none other then Stussy and the special Satin SK8-HIs seen recently. Check out the new store if you’re around the area. If you weren’t fortunate enough to attend the G-Shock 25th Anniversary event in New York last week, you can now catch a glimpse of Kanye West’s performance that night. In this video, you can see Kanye perform his hit song “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” with half nude girls dancing on the stage. It’s a pretty powerful performance so check it. Not really safe for work though.

This past weekend marked the second instance of Harold Hunter Day in New York. The event was fruitful with over 500 skaters in attendance, kicking it for 6 hours of pure skating with numerous skate celebrities in attendance from Chad Muska, The Gonz, to Billy Rohan, Rodney Torres, Vinny Ponte, Todd Jordan, Jeff Pang, and others. People of age would continue the festivites later that night at KCDC Skateshop which included a continuation of beats from DJ Nice Neil as well as various mini ramp sessions. All images via Grotesk.

Japanese photographer Yone is set to present his work to the American public this weekend. In some aspects, Yonehara Yasamasa embodies the same characteristics of another popular Western photographer, Terry Richardson with their liberal photographic style and subjects. One of his most recent projects included an extensive pictorial journey with Aki Hoshino on the book Sneaker Lover. With previous campaigns including Casio G-Shock, Staple Design and American Apparel, LA Confidential will add to a growing list of accomplishments. The event thrown by House of Cassette and Mighty Printing will take place Saturday, May 17th. Due to what we assume is ample amounts of alcohol and the mature content on hand, the event is for attendees over the age of 21. More details can be seen below. Nike 6.0 "Lightning Bolts" BMX Exhibition

As Nike vamps up for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, we saw an increased attention to sports specific offerings. For the BMX events, a special Dunk Gyrizo was created. With that in mind, the recent Nike Sportswear re-launch in Beijing presented another opportunity for Nike to push its association with the extreme sport. The Lightning Bolts exhibition featured not only a live demo by Nike 6.0 riders, Mike Spinner, Maxime Charveron and Nigel Sylvester but also various other exhibitions. A series of artist customized name plates were on hand as well as a display of Michael Lau’s special Nike Blazer for the China BMX Federation.

On Wednesday, New York was the setting for the American celebrations of Casio G-Shock’s 25th anniversary. Among the headliners were the likes of Spike Lee and Kanye West as he ripped the roof off the place with a crazy performance complete with topless astronauts. As part of the celebration, legendary artist Eric Haze put his creativity to work creating a special box set including watch and t-shirt.
