Scott Sternberg is an American fashion designer and founder of clothing brand Band of Outsiders. Shortly after graduating from Washington University with a B.S. in Economics in 1997, Sternberg became assistant in the motion picture talent department of Creative Artists Agency in late 1997, and eventually became an agent at the company’s New Media and Marketing Division in 1999. Sternberg left CAA in 2003 on a new consulting and media venture together with film producer Cary Woods, founder and former CEO of J.Crew Emily Scott, and co-founder and former co-CEO of Nantucket Nectars Tom Scott. It was during this time that Sternberg realized his calling in fashion, and late 2003 saw him launch his clothing brand Band of Outsiders. Beginning as a small menswear line that sold shirts and ties, Band of Outsiders has since expanded to include womenswear. In 2005, Sternberg began his role as photographer for his brand’s Polaroid campaign shoots, which are known for being playful and sexy in nature and often featuring well-known celebrities. Sternberg also has scored a handful of nominations and awards by the CFDA for his contributions to the fashion industry, including Designer of the Year in 2009 and a tie for first place of Menswear Designer of the Year in 2010. In May 2015, news emerged that Band of Outsiders would be shutting down, with insiders reporting that the brand had chosen not to produce its next collection, laid off the majority of its staff, and canceled all fall wholesale orders. The next month, Scott Sternberg announced via Instagram that he would be quitting the brand altogether, after an 11-year stint.
