Cactus Plant Flea Market’s Cynthia Lu has spent 2018 collaborating with a variety of key figures in the community, as well as developing her brand’s signature playful graphics into a blend of covetable T-shirts, hoodies, shorts and caps. A Nike collaboration was hinted at by artist Tom Sachs and later materialized for DSM Los Angeles’s grand opening. Additionally, the label joined forces with NIGO’s HUMAN MADE and Lil Wayne for a thematic embroidered cap and printed sweater, respectively.
Cactus Plant Flea Market’s lighthearted illustrations and washes predate the year’s tie-dye trend, which only played to the brand’s strengths; in the summer, it delivered a psychedelic pair of “fight shorts” that elevated blinding rainbow hues with plants, smiley faces and no less than five distinct typefaces. The distinctive aesthetic has made devoted fans of Virgil Abloh, A$AP Rocky, Sheck Wes and Joe Jonas, though the most devout follower is Lu’s employer and friend, Pharrell.
