Celebrity endorsements can make the career of an otherwise unknown streetwear label — remember Pyrex? For Cynthia Lu’s Cactus Plant Flea Market, it was her boss, Pharrell, who brought the label into the spotlight. Spotted wearing several caps and shirts bearing slogans like “CACTUS PLANT,” the musician’s cosign resulted in an array of other luminaries, including Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West, wearing the small label’s gear in 2017. Lu used to work as Pharrell’s stylist, which explains both his consistent support and access to exclusive and high-demand items — including a hand-stitched “PLANT” cap and the brand’s collaborative hoodies with Anti Social Social Club released over the summer. CPFM maintains a low-key presence, rarely updating its Twitter, Instagram or Big Cartel, yet it boasts three hugely impressive stockists: Paris’s colette and Dover Street Market New York & London. With no defined end goal for the label, it’s unclear what the future holds for Cactus Plant, but considering its popularity amongst relevant musicians, its continued success is assured.
