Leica’s legendary craftsmanship meets papal symbolism in the upcoming Leitz Photographica Auction 47 offering: the Leica M-A no. 5000000 “Pope Francis” set. Gifted by Leica AG to His Holiness in 2024, this unique ensemble, comprising an all-silver-chrome M-A body and Noctilux-M 50 mm f/1.2 lens, each bearing the milestone serial number 5000000 will headline the sale.
A study in refined detail, the camera’s special white covering, painted base plate, back doors and controls are complemented by symbolic engravings: the Keys of Peter on the flash cover and the Pope’s personal motto “Miserando atque eligendo” on the top plate, all filled in white, gold and black enamel. The accompanying Noctilux lens mirrors this finish, while the body cap and lens cap carry the Vatican City coat of arms. Both pieces are dated in Roman numerals “A.D. MMXXIV,” marking the year of presentation, and are housed in a bespoke presentation box. This one-of-a-kind lot not only celebrates a storied collaboration between Leica and the Vatican but also offers collectors a rare fusion of horological artistry and sacred heritage.
Pre-bidding opens October 22, with a €30,000 EUR (approx. $35,169 USD) starting price and an estimated hammer range of €60,000 – €70,000 EUR (approx. $70,338 – $82,061 USD). As a gesture of charity, the Holy See has stipulated that 100% of the proceeds will support those in need, with no buyer’s premium applied.
