Toyota has unveiled its new third-generation fuel cell system, marking a significant step toward its goal of achieving a hydrogen-based society. The system, known as the 3rd Gen FC System, has been specifically developed to address the demands of commercial vehicles, offering durability on par with conventional diesel engines.

Notably, Toyota’s latest fuel cell technology delivers substantial improvements in both fuel efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to previous iterations. With durability doubled and fuel efficiency enhanced by 20 percent, the system provides increased cruising range and reduced maintenance requirements, boosting its appeal for commercial sector applications.

The new fuel cell system, which Toyota plans to introduce commercially as early as 2026, will initially target markets in Japan, Europe, North America and China. It promises versatility beyond automotive use, including applications in heavy-duty trucks, buses, stationary power generators, rail and maritime sectors. Its compact design enables easier integration across various vehicle types.
