The Seoul-based studio transforms an industrial component into a responsive, fluid seating experience.
Summary
- Design studio p(erson)al’s d-gc 1 chair reimagines the gooseneck component as a sculptural, responsive design element
- As the debut piece for the “de-goose” porject, the chair adapts to posture, offering functionality through subtle tension feedback
Woojin Park, founder of Seoul-based design studio p(erson)al, introduces the d-gc 1 chair as the debut piece from his experimental “de-goose” project. Known for reinterpreting industrial materials through a personal lens, Park uses the gooseneck – a flexible structural component typically found in lighting and machinery – as the central design element. By elevating this utilitarian part into a sculptural and functional form, the chair challenges conventional notions of furniture construction and invites a dialogue between objectivity and subjectivity.
The d-gc 1 chair’s dynamic structure allows the chair to respond to the user’s posture, functioning simultaneously as a backrest and armrest. As the sitter leans into the chair, subtle shifts in tension and feedback create an interactive experience, making the user’s presence an integral part of the design’s expression. The result is a piece that feels both intuitive and performative — an object that adapts rather than dictates.
Park’s use of the “spirit level” as a symbolic reference further underscores the conceptual depth of the project. Just as the tool measures physical balance, the d-gc 1 chair embodies a negotiation between standards and interpretation, industrial function and personal meaning. Through “de-goose”, Park continues to explore how overlooked components can be reimagined into thoughtful, emotionally resonant design, transforming the mundane into the poetic.
