An exhibition of new work by Tyler Mitchell is set to open at Gagosian New York next month. For Ghost Images, Mitchell returns to his Southern upbringing, weaving together scenes of seaside leisure with arresting reflections on the psychological and historical weight of the landscapes they inhabit.

Shot along the coastal islands of Georgia, the images unfold across beaches, dunes and estuaries that, on its face, are alive with natural beauty and whispers of serenity, yet a closer eye reveals the scars of human history. In works like “Gulfs Between,” “Voyage” and “Voyage II,” toy boats, reminiscent of childlike innocence, allude to the Jekyll Island-bound ships used to transport enslaved people, while the charred ruins of the Carnegie family mansion take centerstage in “Dollhouse.” Through this duality, Mitchell asks whether photographs can capture the intangible and offer a lens of self-definition against the backdrop of history.

As its title suggests, Ghost Images circles “presences that are unseen but deeply felt.” In many works, Mitchell veils his subjects, exploring ideas of layering and ephemerality through an experimental approach to form and composition. Taking cues from photographers equally drawn to “intangible aspects of space, spirit and the human form,” the artist asserts a material presence while conjuring echoes of the past, suggesting that memory lingers, not as shadow, but as a light refracted through time.

The exhibition will be on view at the gallery from February 27 through April 5, 2025.
