Volkswagen Shows Off All-Electric ID. GTI Concept
Unveiled during Munich’s IAA Mobility.
Volkswagen is aiming to launch 11 new all-electric models by 2027, each geared towards meeting the varying, individual needs of its drivers.
Leading the charge is the ID. GTI, showcased as a concept car at Munich’s IAA Mobility car show. The sporty offering is a practical, front-wheel-drive hatchback that builds on the capabilities of last year’s ID.2all concept.
While the ID.2all is slated to arrive in 2025, Volkswagen is angling to have the ID. GTI enters production in 2027, starting in Europe before it’s eventually considered for sale in the US. The company hasn’t yet shared the specific power of the new car, though it’s expected to at least pack a minimum of the 223 horsepower of previous iterations.
It’ll also likely have a similar sound system to the last version of the electric GTI, in which Volkswagen sought to recreate the sound of some of the original GTI made in the 1980s.
“The complete range of our new orientation will be visible for the first time at the IAA Mobility,” CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Thomas Schäfer said. “Volkswagen is delivering what customers want: whether electric, combustion engine or hybrid vehicles – all our new models impress with enjoyable efficiency, intuitive operation and high quality that is evident in all areas. In this way, we are meeting our promise of once more focusing completely on customer needs.”
