Since the brand’s inception, Feng Chen Wang’s bamboo bags have been synonymous with the brand’s name. Over the last several years, the label has expanded on its original concept to produce all sorts of new iterations of its core accessory; and for Fall/Winter 2023, the label’s lattest addition comes in the shape of a heart.

The heart-shaped bamboo bag, like its square, cylinder and oval siblings, takes a village to produce. Wang is from China’s Fujian region, where bamboo is harvested en masse; and by using the plant, the designer is able to tap into the area’s local communities for assistance in planting, growing, harvesting and reworking her materials. Notably, Wang hires a female workforce of artisans, who have worked with bamboo for decades, to create the product.

The bamboo requires three months of preparation after it’s been harvested. In that time period, Wang’s team cuts the plant into strips and shapes them before oiling and polishing each piece for arrangement. After hand-gluing parts of the plant together, the bamboo is finally ready to be assembled in bag form.

Adding the final touch, Wang wraps each plant-based silhouette with a utilitarian leather harness, featuring the designer’s logo, for streamlined functionality. Her namesake iconography also appears in a faded brown tone on the bamboo itself.

Feng Chen Wang’s FW23 bamboo bags are now available to shop on the brand’s webstore. See the collection in the gallery above.
