Watch Hawaii's Outrigger Canoe Paddling Team Undergo Vigorous Training
As the Kona team prep to go against the Tahitians in the French Polynesian ocean.
Canoe paddling was initially a mode of transportation to transfer Polynesians from island to island in addition to being a vehicle used for hunting and fighting. It has since become a competitive extreme water sport as seen in this short clip produced by Red Bull. Here, the Hawaiians team from Kona speak on the origins of outrigger canoe paddling and how it’s both an exercise for personal strength and spiritual growth. Team captain Kainoa Tanoai makes sure his team paddles 14 hours a week to ensure they’re in shape to go up against the Tahitians, another strong squad from French Polynesia. Check out the clip above to learn more about the age-old sport and see the Red Bull Wa’a team’s vigorous training process.
