As we set to close the chapter on yet another spring/summer season, now is as good a time as any to look ahead in preparation for the upcoming seasonal shift and all that it entails. In taking a comprehensive look back at what played out on the runways of fashion’s major cities, not to mention the slew of street-ready lookbooks we’ve recently caught wind of, it looks as if fall-friendly styling makes way not only for timeless essentials but also an assemblage of the unconventional. Always a fan of the quintessentially classic, we thought this time around to narrow down some of the more obscure trends to look out for come October.

Sequins

Meant to add an element of opulent flare, sequins emerged to the menswear forefront landing quite heavily on various outerwear iterations. As a shock to one, jackets in any genre tends to play the statement role in fall ensembles, however, the addition of sequins though add depth — adding an air of luxury not often obtained in casual-type gear.

Pajamas

One of the more enigmatic trends projected to make considerable noise for fall, is the profound showing of pajama-inspired garb. Outside of the archetypal boxer/undershirt duo, we bore witness to full-on belted robes and matching two-piece sets.

Neckerchiefs

Taking shine away from the bad-ass bandanas that bombarded the landscape in the ’80s and ‘90s, similar-styled accessory pieces this time tied around the neck as opposed to draping the head. One time embodying a sense of unruly rebellion, these accentuating neckerchiefs instead adopt much more of a sophisticated undertone.

Strapping

Typically categorized as function, design houses and brands alike made a spirited play for form with the creative use of excessive strapping. Seen wrapped around the head, torso, arms and everywhere else for that matter, this rather peculiar fad added a whimsical facet to ensembles much more somber in nature.

Multi-Print

Another such trend known to surface more readily in April is multi-patterned prints as it found its way into lookbooks, magazines and runways the world over. From florals, to paisley, to checks and polka dots, many such prints emerged in one ensemble, some on the same piece even — shattering the notion that cold-weather wears are better suited for function.

Wallet Chains

First brought to the limelight from the biker subcultures of the ‘50s, and later the fledgling punk scene of the ‘70s, not to mention the skate scene explosion of the ‘80s, wallet chains once served a utilitarian role — keeping wallets attached at the hip while engaging in activities of every kind. This accessory more now sought-after for its stylistic flare has stayed the course throughout the years — emerging quite strongly for fall.

Oversized Tote Bags

Considered a stylish, albeit more pragmatic option to a briefcase, tote bags prove useful for lugging around laptops, books, even shoes if need be. As we look ahead to the impending fall season, oversized iterations of this carryall will soon bombard the streets in various versions of canvas and leather, amongst others.

Trail Runners

8 Obscure Trends for Fall/Winter 2016

In and around this time, fashion in general tends to make way for items that straddle the line between practical and stylish — footwear being a great medium to showcase both. To help better deal with the upcoming seasonal shift in all of its temperamental changes, we take a look at some functional trail runner silhouettes that lend itself equally as well to outdoor excursions as would to a night out on the town.
