Should they even qualify as actual sports?
Perhaps, the first examples that come to mind when you think of summer Olympic sports are swimming, gymnastics and basketball. As you excitedly flip through the handful of television channels streaming these events, however, you come across a bunch of professionally trained athletes racewalking? Is power walking an actual event at the world’s famous games? Apparently so—10-mile distances of the event were first introduced in the 1908 London Olympics.
Lifehacker recently released a video showcasing 10 of the most bizarre Olympic events. Some other notable mentions from the list include dressage, which is basically horse dancing, as well as the modern pentathlon which is comprised of five various events spanning from fencing to pistol shooting. Aside from the aforesaid events however, one would probably consider the hammer throw and synchronized swimming events as the more commonly known and accepted competitions.
