'Tribe' Documentary Explores TRIBE NYC's Love for '90s Retro Fashion
How one Brooklyn-born crew takes old school hip-hop fashion to the next level.
The members of New York City-based art and music collective TRIBE NYC were brought together by a mutual interest of self-expression that resonated with ’80s and ’90s fashion. Since founding the group in Brooklyn in 2012, the TRIBE’s six core members — King Kid Love, Manolo Mike, Chill, Prynce, Teddy and Paulie — continue to embrace styles influenced by ’80s music and ’90s rap videos where trends like Polo gear, flat tops and Coogi sweaters are incorporated into their everyday look. Nicolas Heller directed Tribe, a documentary for Rolling Stone on how the old school hip-hop aesthetic is an integral part of the TRIBE community’s lifestyles, and how it fuels their respective pursuits in the creative realms of fashion, dance, poetry, music and art.
