Awful Records‘ Slug Christ has a voice for post-punk and old-school, hardcore-birthed emo, but a flow and style of rapping that sounds tailored for fans of rappers like Bones, Awful Records’ art-punk-rap aesthetic, and AutoTune-melodies. It’s a sound that he’s been fine-tuning in recent months, and his latest effort — a collaborative EP with “rhythm-and-creep” producer GAHM — might be his most evolved development of it. He doesn’t directly rap over GAHM’s gloomy, melancholic productions; rather, Slug Christ’s voice just sort of melts, floats, and droops over them like slowly-dissolving snow. It’s a unique way of doing “rap” or “hip-hop” or whatever you want to label it, and going into 2015 Awful Records appear to have all their genre-bases covered. They really do appear to have something for everyone in their collective.
