Standard album releases are becoming a thing of the past in today’s music scene. Artists are constantly trying to come up with new ways to offer material to fans and, recently, we have seen a trend emerging that consists of the ‘surprise’ album. The best example would have to be Beyoncé‘s self-titled album, which was released as an iTunes exclusive without any advanced notice. Well, it appears that someone else had already thought of this method. OFWGKTA frontman Tyler, the Creator had this idea for his 2013 Wolf album but wasn’t able to bring these plans to fruition. Currently prepping for this year’s ‘Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival,’ Tyler told Billboard in an interview “That was my idea years ago!” Regardless of who thought of it first, it is likely we will continue to see albums being delivered in inventive, unique ways as technology becomes more sophisticated and more universally understood.
