Just a few years ago, starting a brand with your friend was up there with BASE jumping for ‘least popular activity ever,’ per the near-universal financial strap that was the Great Recession. In 2013 though, things seem to be on the upswing, especially in skateboarding. A surprising number of notable professionals are abandoning longtime sponsors in pursuit of new ventures, while other new entrants are popping up altogether. Perhaps the most notable of these new ventures is the Asphalt Yacht Club – a new skate apparel brand delivered as the brainchild of Stevie Williams and Stefan Janoski, both street legends of their own right. The brand unveiled itself to the public via a launch party in Los Angeles, celebrating in 2013 style at the Malibu Inn. The drinks were almost as cool as the vibes, with a mood set by AYC’s wearable, easygoing aesthetic, and dashed by an end-of-the-night performance from none other than French Montana.
