Essentials: Hideto Kawahara for mastermind JAPAN
Ahead of the latest pop-up endeavor from mastermind JAPAN and its culinary offshoot mastermind

Ahead of the latest pop-up endeavor from mastermind JAPAN and its culinary offshoot mastermind RAMEN, we here at HYPEBEAST linked up with celebrated chef and ramen master Hideto Kawahara to get the inside scoop on the gastronomic artist’s own necessities for the latest installment of Essentials. Known for his delicious pork broth, the chef’s tonkotsu has become legendary not only in his native Hakata-ku ward of Fukuoka in Japan, but across the globe thanks to the establishment of additional HIDE-CHAN Ramen outposts in the likes of Hong Kong and New York City. Surprisingly, Kawahara’s own Essentials don’t include a single piece of culinary equipment or any seemingly indispensable ingredients. Instead, the master chef’s favorite pieces focus on a life outside the HIDE-CHAN kitchen – one dominated by mastermind’s own skull-adorned, blacked-out aesthetic. Featuring the likes of a Leica M Monochrom Camera, Vertu Signature S Design Rock Phone, and a customized Rolex from fragment design and Bamford Watch Department, Kawahara’s necessary luxuries include a bevy of mastermind JAPAN collaborations – everything from Goyard bags and cases to OAKLEY Frogskins and a SENSE stationary set are present here. Enjoy a look at some of Hideto Kawahara’s favorite pieces and be sure to catch a taste of the chef’s ascendent work as mastermind RAMEN takes over HIDE-CHAN Ramen in Hong Kong from July 26 through July 28.
