Above Second in Hong Kong is the stage for Japanese painter Tat Ito’s “Shinagawa Shinju” exhibition which showcases the hybrid worlds of the artist. In his selection of paintings, Ito uses his paintbrush in a similar manner to the storytellers of Japanese rakugo – a form of verbal entertainment based on comical monologues about ordinary lives – with execution creating witty, profound and comical narratives of the world. By overlaying differing perspectives and referencing different cultures, politics and personal narratives, Ito has investigated the relationship between traditional and contemporary ideologies as well as the similarities and differences of individual experience. “Shinagawa Shinju” runs through July 20 at Above Second.
