September 11, 2001 will always be remembered as one of the most horrific, devastating days in the history of the United States of America. Without a doubt, the terrorist air strikes that occurred on that fateful day and the resulting deaths of nearly 3,000 people will be engrained into our minds and hearts for the rest of our lives. To pay tribute on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, a very special ceremony was held at Ground Zero, the site at which the World Trade Center once stood in the heart of New York City’s financial district. As part of the ceremony, 12-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Paul Simon got on stage with his acoustic guitar and gave a beautiful, heartfelt, solacing performance of one of his most celebrated songs. The song he chose to sing was the 1965 Simon & Garfunkel hit “The Sound of Silence,” which he wrote in the wake of another of the U.S.’s most epochal tragedies: the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The lasting relevance of the song is exemplified by Simon’s performance yesterday, which was captured on film and can be viewed above.
