55 years ago, bluesman Screamin’ Jay Hawkins released “I Put a Spell on You” and rumor has it that the eccentric artist blacked out during the recording session of the emotional song. Matthew Dear’s haut noire-inspired “You Put a Smell On Me,” off his Black City LP, does not sound anything like it and is a rather subtle display of emotions. LA based team Photocall now decided to turn the directions on this electronic avant-pop tune as he describes below.
“I began this remix by listening to Matt’s vocals over and over again, focusing on the storyline. I imagined a slimeball character out of a Bret Easton Ellis novel, luring a young Hollywood hopeful to his Malibu compound possibly to never return. I built the hypnotic melody around that idea. As for the toms… What can I say? I love Van Halen.” – Eli Epstein aka Photocall
