Friday signals our latest round of HYPEBEAST Weekly Staff Picks. This weeks choices brought to you by Kevin, Eugene, Season and Jason include Medicom Toy’s latest updates of Bearbricks, Jason solidifying the notion his unhealthy love for pants that roll up, the King of Spring Skateboard Showdown Recap and the Visvim Folk Bear Foot FBT Shaman. Kevin – King of Spring Skateboard Showdown Recap

I’m neither from New York nor am I apt at skating, but I definitely enjoying seeing events that bring together a community together. The video recap includes some nice cinematography as well. Looking forward to upcoming events from the sponsors and organizers!

Jason – Resonate NP Schmit Pants

I’m a fan of pant derivatives like the NP 3/4 Schmit from Resonate. Adds a more refined look I think and presents a good and fashionable alternative to shorts in the summer. The Velcro attachment lets you adjust how overall aesthetics of the pants as well to offer variations to your fit.

Season – Batman & Joker Bearbricks

I’m a HUGE Bearbrick fan/collector. I’ve slowed down recently but still love my Bearbricks. The Batman & Joker set which I assume was inspired by the upcoming movie despite the old school colors caught my eye. I like the colors a lot as well as the creepy eye-less Joker.

Eugene – Visvim Folk Bear Foot FBT Shaman

When we went to shoot the Visvim Folk Bear Foot FBT Shaman to compliment our interview with Hiroki Nakamura, I instantly became memorized by yet another solid release from Visvim. It took a solid 30 minute barrage of yelling from Season to convince me not to grab the tan pair. Having experienced the Visvim Folk collection first hand with the FBT Lhamo, the updated Shaman quickly made me forget all about the Lhamo. Not sure if the dangling skirt is solely to blame for me liking this pair but I couldn’t help but try to justify the exorbitant costs commanded by much of the Folk series. DIY hack job on my Lhamos a la Shaman!

On a slightly related note, I find it ironic that in the last few years we’ve seen an insurgence of moccasin styled footwear obviously inspired by traditional First Nations footwear. The moccasin has quickly become a popular style not only amongst Visvim but other brands as well. Yet growing up amongst a strong First Nations population, these people often faced the brunt of some unfortunate socio-economic circumstances. Problems that really nobody wanted to deal with whether it be poverty or rampant alcoholism. But as we see it now, the aesthetics of First Nations people is sought after yet, the people that represent it are an after thought.
