Concepts Boston Grand Opening

462 0 Comments

For over ten years, Concepts has occupied a space within Harvard Square’s sneaker staple, The Tannery. Just recently, Concepts officially cracked open the doors for business in their new very own retail space. With the aesthetics left partly in the hands of Soldier Design, the store’s architecture features great attention to detail. The roof and walls mimic ply layers of a skateboard, a reference to Concepts role as a premier skate destination. Other highlights include wool felt seating, fire places, a portrait done by Futura and a members-only lounge in the basement. Check out the new Concepts for the full deal.

Visvim FBT Elk

In some ways, the FBT can be considered the face of Visvim’s footwear collection representing the brands success in creating their own reinterpretations of popular classics with an almost obsessive attention to quality and detail. A new series of elk skin FBTs have released in three colorways, consisting of black, brown and white. With the most recent leather releases coming in the form of the Christmas Pack, the buttery soft elk skin is a better indication of Visvim’s dedication to quality. FCRB 2008 Spring/Summer Collection

FCRB 2008 Spring/Summer Collection

Throughout Hirofumi Kiyonaga’s three brands, FCRB (FC Real Bristol) is perhaps the most casual of his three offerings. The football inspired collection does well in combining a casual football culture with more refined pieces in a truly diverse collection. Aside from technical releases involving fabrics competent for active use, the collection also features items such as chinos and blazers. While it’s often difficult to combine an athletic aesthetic into a more fashionable product, FCRB in our minds have achieved a great balance. The unveiling of their S/S collection is also something innovative and fun, utilizing toy dolls and miniature versions of the products as displays with blow-up shots of the products. View the interactive display over at FCRB.

Afrology by James Top

Afrology by James Top

Afrology by James Top is an upcoming solo exhibit surrounding the culture of the popular 1970’s hairstyle, the “Afro”. The seventeen renditions of James Top represents the base of a deeper message which Top attempts to convey regarding what he calls the “African American Experience”. From his time as founder member of the The Odd Partners (TOP) the graffiti group to bombing NYC trains and creating gallery work, James Top can now be seen in the classroom teaching a controversial class on graffiti at the Bronx’s Hostos College. The debate rages on about teaching the culturally rich but illegal art form in a school room environment. Afrology will open on Friday, February 22nd at the Essex Street Gallery. Ace Hotel x Number (N)ine Collection

Ace Hotel x Number (N)ine Collection

Portland’s Ace Hotel forms the latest inspiration for Japanese brand Number (N)ine’s 2008 Fall collection. In a movement made popular by the likes of Kurt Cobain through the Northwestern corridor, this collection designed by Takahiro Miyashita possess a distinct grunge tone. The runway show titled “My Own Private Portland” commenced with a voicemail message and made-in Portland Pendleton wool blankets for guests. The blankets emblazoned with imagery of the iconic and historical significant Thompson elk statute represent a throw back to America’s past as well as a good showing of direction for this collection. For Miyashita, the inclusion of Ace Hotel in his inspiration signified his desire to shed light on Portland in a real and authentic manner, one that showcases the luxurious, albeit in an irregular manner which remembers the past. The blankets will be available for sale through Number (N)ine’s Manhattan location as well as a soon to be opened Ace outpost in New York.
