As the father of Rickey Kim (of Evil Monito) immigrated to the United States, he brought with him a strong passion to not only survive but also to succeed in this new land. This attitude borne out of a childhood that endured the Korean War of the 50’s created a man in which Rickey would fear as a child and hate as an adolescent. However as most people realize, as time passes, one cannot help but forgive and seek closure regarding difficult situations of the past.
This latest collaboration is in ways part of the closure Mr. Kim seeks. His collaboration with Kangol allowed him create hats which are both honest and creative with his emotions. The utilization of several symbols, Nessie, Heritage, Evil Monito and Mr. Kim Says; allowed Mr. Kim to highlight different creative journeys that he has taken in the past. Within the fabric lining of each hat, you will find actual archival photographs taken from Mr. Kim’s family albums, with a woven crest signifying his last name “Kim” in Korean calligraphy.
The Evil Monito x Kangol collaboration will encompass two hats, the Classic Cabby model and the Felt Fedora. The Classic Cabby model was re-inspired by the use of British Millerain Wax Cotton, a fabric traditionally used in British culture used amongst royal hunting parties. The Felt Fedora features a cap which in actuality was never part of Kangol’s existing range of hats. The hat was created from scratch and fabricated in Pennsylvania. The hat is waterproof as well as crushable meaning it will retain its shape when subjected to various forces. Stay tuned for more details regarding these hats.
