While some relish at the opportunity to cash on a Banksy piece done up on their property, others are frankly not buying into the hype. Case in point, as a New York shop owner painted over an entire wall that was filled with graffiti. Albeit, the Banksy piece seen on his wall was sharing a spot with a few other artists, at the rate various Banksy pieces have been going on the market there's a lot you could do with a piece from the famous street artist.

Amongst the most well known street artists today, Banksy has struck again in perhaps his most ironic piece of work yet. Seen painted on the side of a post office, his slogan "One Nation Under CCTV" was conducted behind a large fence with CCTV (surveillance camera) coverage. The job required the construction of three stories of scaffolding to complete the job and represents one of Banksy's boldest attempts and the irony is brought on by the fact this was all happening under the "eye in the sky" surveillance cameras. However, with the surging popularity of Banksy, increased publicity and large sums his works command (however this was done on a post office), maybe somebody willingly turned the blind eye?

Yesterday on Valentines Day, Sotheby's auction house hosted a Valentine's Day (AUCTION) RED auction which sold artwork from some of the most popular artist of today to bidders that had big pockets. The Damien Hirst x Banksy painting titled "Keep it Spotless" originally estimated at $250,000 - $350,000 fetched an amazing $1,870,000 USD. Another of Hirst's paintings called "Where There’s a Will There’s a Way" skyrocketed to $7,150,000 USD. Pretty amazing consider that the US is heading towards a recession.

Just recently, auction house Bonhams played host to rare auction selling works of street art and graffiti. With a list of artists including Banksy, Faile, Blek Le Rat, Keith Haring, Adam Neate, Space Invader, Anthony Micallef and the Japanese trio of Aya Takano, Chino Aoshima and Takashi Murakami, the range of talent for sale did not disappoint. However it was with obvious prediction that current pop art superstar Banksy would steal the show and he did not disappoint with some of his art works fetching close to a half a million US dollars for a stencil none the less. For the whole list of Banksy sale prices check out Supertouch.
