Ghostwriting in music in general is accepted. But, in Hip Hop you are judged by your lyricism which makes people (or at least used to) look down on people who had their lyrics written for them. But once Hip Hop switched from a urban street corner dance music to marketable and commercially viable it has become more acceptable, while the "purists" still gristle and get pissed off about it. AT the end of the day it's looked at as a business and when that shit blaring on the radio and making millions record company execs and ultimately the artists dont give a fuck who wrote the shit.

No way for Guru, I've listened to Gang Starr all my life and I was always under the impression that he wrote his own stuff, his lyrics are always so on point. If that's true that changes my perception of him entirely.

Snoop still write his own raps, but Shawty Redd wrote "sexual eruption" and Everlast wrote "buy my medicine". So maybe he only used writers for "those" type of records

D.O.C. ghost wrote for Eazy E and Dr. Dre
Nas wrote "Miami" for Will Smith
Jay-Z wrote "Still D.R.E." for Dr. Dre and "I'll Be" for Foxy Brown
T.I. wrote "Freshazimiz" for Bow Wow
Sauce Money wrote "I'll Be Missing You" for Diddy
Mase wrote Diddy verse on "Mo Money Mo Problems"
B.I.G. wrote the majority of Junior Mafia's album

Question, are ghostwriters paid a one-time thing? Or do they get royalties? If so, that's not a bad deal if you're not into the spotlight.

Ghostwriters most likely don't get royalties. Because, they arent listed as actual writers on the song they are paid by the artist or the record company.

Yeah...if your an actual ghostwriter, your work goes uncredited so they're probably just cut a check. Now some artists, like Didy or Dr. Dre give credit to their writers so they might get royalties. Sauce Money said in a song something like "how am I broke when I'm still getting checks from I'm missing you"

naw, snoop said that his whole album was written by other people. he said it was his way of trying to get other rappers noticed in the same way he did when he blew up after people knew he wrote for dre. but snoop has plenty of rhymes that will keep him known as one of the rappers with the most unique and smoothest flows ever.
