(Value Village). Its pretty stiff denim.. the brand on it is Golden Horse.
Im thinking of getting it tapered and maybe dye it black to make it into a longer, slim fitting denim jacket. I think it could work. also it took me 10 minutes to get the buttons undone and I won't even bother putting in the effort to do it back up again when i wear it

That jacket is way to big. Denim jackets should fit similar to leather jackets so it should be fairly snug not as loose as that. That to me looks like a denim poncho.

I'm getting it tapered AND dying it black. i'm wearing way too much blue denim there.
also, I might sew in some liner later on and maybe throw on some toggles instead of the buttons.

Agreed. Take it to the tailors and have it cut to your dimensions. We are in the era of Slim-Fit clothing. I also wouldn't recommend that you dye it black either. It's already a plain Denim Jacket and dying it black really won't help. Think about how that natural blue dye will age...
