Go Behind-the-Scenes at the Scottish Mill Supplying Ralph Lauren & J.Crew
Set to close after 131 years, catch a glimpse of this last piece of Scotland’s fabric-making heritage.
Located at the Scottish borders, the Robert Noble Mill has been creating sought-after fabrics without pause since 1884, garnering a client list reflective of its commitment to quality — Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Brooks Brothers and Paul Smith are only a few of the labels that find provenance in the mill’s Peebles premises. Employing over 700 workers during its heyday, only 87 skilled designers, weavers, tuners, finishers, darners, drawers and warpers keep the mill in full capacity today. Filmmaker Liam Dickson talks to one of the mill’s longtime workers, Kenny Bauld, about life at the institution on the eve of the mill’s closure at the end of this year, after 131 years in operation. Watch the short film above for a genuine documentation of this last pocket of Scotland’s Victorian fabric-making heritage.
