Sony Is Crowdfunding a Smartwatch
Introducing the NFC-equipped Wena.
Sony has unveiled the latest project from its employee-led First Flight crowdfunding platform: the Wena. A stylish smartwatch, the Wena — short for “wear electronics naturally” — taps Citizen’s timepiece design expertise, pairing a 22mm strap with a clean face and tech like a FeliCa-supported NFC chip for contactless payments, fitness tracking, water resistance, vibration alerts, and a seven-color LED for notifications. Oddly enough, Wena is only set to support iOS 8 and above — meaning the design won’t work with Sony’s own phones. The tech giant is currently hoping to raise ¥10 million JPY (approximately $82,556 USD) via First Flight while the smartwatch will ship in March of 2016 in $287 USD Three Hands and $576 USD Chronograph varieties.
