Paige Denim Takes Us Inside Its Brand New Laser Process
Paige Denim takes us behind the doors of its factory to demonstrates how the brand fades its jeans
Paige Denim takes us behind the doors of its factory to demonstrates how the brand fades its jeans using precision engineering, producing beautiful instanteous fades and whiskering in the denim in mere seconds as opposed to the months (of consistent wear) and years it normally takes. There has always been differing camps of thought including those who prefer pristine, raw denim, versus others who are more interested in the process and comfort of a pair of well-executed distressed jeans. However, given the high level of customization possible with Paige Denim’s lasering process, this opens up the doors for both greater sustainability and authentic fades. Understandably, there’s only so much Paige could divulge about the unique process, but they were kind enough to share a few words on how new technologies and methods like this ones can both recreate older aesthetics while minimizing their footprint.

Can you tell us a bit about this special laser treatment?
The wonderful thing about using lasers are it combines history with technology, creating beautiful worn-looking jeans with cutting edge technology. It uses high-powered infrared laser beams to burn away the indigo from the surface of the denim. By using different intensities, we are able to create an authentic faded jean.
What is the workflow and process behind this technology?
We collaborate with a highly-skilled graphic designer who is trained to create our vision using lasers as their medium.
How does the final product/aesthetic differ between traditional methods of processing vs. with layering?
It looks the same, but uses a lot less water and chemicals, so it’s much better as far as sustainability and being environmentally friendly are concerned.
How important is it for fashion to start really considering the environment and sustainability?
It’s very important for companies to do their part in utilizing green practices as production never really slows down. And as more and more environmentally friendly practices are becoming available, there is really no excuse not to participate as much as possible.
