NasIllmatic celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and to commemorate the legacy of the seminal work, a documentary on the record is set to release as part of this month’s Tribeca Film Festival. Titled, Time Is Illmatic, the film explores the origins and impact of a hip-hop album that was groundbreaking in terms of both style and content, as well as its lofty ambitions. “When I made Illmatic, I was trying to make the perfect album,” explains Nas in the documentary’s trailer. “I was trying to make you experience my life. I wanted you to look at hip-hop differently. I wanted you to feel that hip-hop was changing and becoming something more real.” Time Is Illmatic will premiere on April 16 at New York City’s Beacon Theater, and will be joined by a special double-disc version of the LP, Illmatic XX, as well as an upcoming tour.
